Workshop Title: The Five Principles of HOP: From Idea to Implementation (4-8 hours)
HOP (Human and Organizational Performance) is a risk-based operating philosophy that recognizes error is part of the human condition and an organization's processes, systems and culture greatly influence employees’ decisions, actions, and consequently, their likelihood of success. HOP (also called the “New View” in some circles) is a global movement towards using the social sciences to better understand how to design resilient systems. Said another way, humans fail (make unintentional errors and break rules) with a known frequency that is affected by known influencing factors. If we take those data inputs as a given, we design better systems – including better rules, and better methods of accountability so we can work safely and “fail safely.” This engaging and informative workshop will provide an overview of 3Ms HOP journey, while equipping the participants to 1) understand why humans fail so they can design better, more resilient systems, allowing their workers to “fail safely” 2) uncover human biases and provide insights into how to overcome our own biases and 3) frame safety and health not as a problem the worker has, but a responsibility the organization holds, so we can listen better, lead better, and create organizations that learn better.
